Personally, I liked Ben Kingsley’s portrayal and interpretation of the Mandarin,
Sure, Kingsley did a good job…I just didn’t like how they made the Mandarin:
*Spoiler Alert*
Nothing more than a puppet for Killian’s egotistical desires for world power. I mean, the character has enough going for him all by himself, why turn him into a smokescreen to hide another villain, who could’ve also carried a movie all by himself? It’s like with Spider-Man 3; If you’ve got a perfectly powerful villain, why add another? Or even a third? More villains don’t make the movie stronger, then just dilute the villainy. And now, they can never use the Mandarin in his full glory in another movie. Seems a waste, in my opinion.

But I totally agree, Kingsley’s portrayal was pretty good, even if the reveal was disappointing.
This was perfect in every sense. I hope the next team up movie with Blue Steel will portray the villains a bit better.

Get warmed up, Im the fanboy.
My reasoning is pretty straightforward: You’ve heard a hero is gauged by the quality of his nemesis. Cap got red skull, Spidey got Doc Ock and Goblin, Hulk got Abomination and Leader, and Supes got Luther, and Bats got Ras Al Ghul and Joker.
Somehow, with Iron man, there is this inverted-blind spot, I dont know. There seems to be a lot of leeway here as its the one who opened up the marvel projects. Whiplash, which even the COMIC couldnt help out, -and gave up on-, gets Mickey Rourke, and is suddenly -not- retarded, And Mandarin, easily Tonys Red Skull, is now a media joke.
Thats why fanboys are irked, because that comes back on shell head.
For everyone who never heard of the comic, absolutely, the movies great entertainment, but please, dont take what you saw there and expect to find it in the comic.
The comic had -good- storylines.
Sure there was crazy ones, but hey, Obviously ‘Extremis’ and ‘The five nightmares’ were both strong influences in this movie. As opposed to combining them both, and then mixing in everything else you had leftover in the spice rack.. (Man Things wife? Really?-REALLY-?)
Just keep it to a good story.

LOL, thanks for your thoughts! I was actually OK with the revision on film because I thought it “worked” fo their purposes. ALTHOUGH…. I understand how, as a fan of a character, it’s disappointing when the “real” version isn’t realized in mass media.
Here’s hoping that “actor” somehow finds a box of cursed rings, and gets possessed by the spirit of the REAL Mandarin!
That would be hilarious! Wouldn’t really work with Iron Man in the movies, cuz’ there’s no “Spirits” in this ultra-realistic take on him, but I still think it would be funny if they found a way to make the Mandarin come back anyway, only for real this time.
What I really hope is that they let Gwenneth Paltrow keep her Extremis powers, since she’s been kinda inactive the past few movies, but in 3 she really kicked ass. Maybe let her protect herself from now on, eh Tony?
Blue Steel fans will not be happy no matter who is portrayed on the screen- they just don’t get that the characters have to change to not be offensive or simply bridge character development that has to be done a few minutes that took decades to build up in the comics!!!!
I hope they are OK with the upcoming Major USA 2 film, because if he hated this his head might explode seeing that one next year!
Hah, funny commentary on the touchy subject of film re-imaginings of beloved characters.
I picture James Hong as the voice of the Mad Mongol. (Or Frank Welker using his Fat Guy voice from “Garfield’s Feline Fantasies”.)
Personally, I have no idea how the Mad Mongol is eating sweets with those fingernails. Is he impaling them out of the box?
I’ve always found this an odd argument, and rather indicative of the lack of respect that the comic/superhero genre gets from larger media. When characters from books are butchered, it annoys the hell out of people, and rarely does anyone get the ‘it’s just a book, who cares’ response to it. That’s usually the order of the day for comic characters.
Just odd.
I hope we see more of the Mad Mongol. Somehow I read his lines in George Takei’s voice.

As a huge Blue Steel fan, I enjoyed Blue Steel 3; I just recognize that despite several characters’ assertions to the contrary, the Mad Mongol did not actually appear in the movie.
The reveal felt really weird, I kept waiting for him to blast Tony and it never came.
Sleet to the King patches some things up for me though.
