I’ve met people that bristle when you don’t call them “doctor” if they’ve earned their doctorate. Plus, all these villains called “Doctor”…. are they allย really doctors? Probably not!

I take it he’s a fan of Austin Powers.
The answer, of course, is “No.” Of course which ones are real doctors is hard to guess. Doctor Octopus really has a doctorate (specializing in studying radiation).
On the other hand Doctor Doom had to flee school before graduating (on the other, other hand, Doctor Doom invented Marvel’s first human created time-machine and runs his own country filled with killer robots, so he can call himself whatever he wants).
MrGBH: That joke is considerably older than Austin Powers! I remember people saying that at parties back in the 1980s.
Yeah, Brian is right in that respect. It’s sort of an old comic book argument about the “doctor” title, as Shik pointed out. It’s as much a joke as it is to reveal some of Dr. Malefactor’s character. ๐ And, also, people with “doctor” titles do take great offense when you call them “mister.” I knew one, but she wasn’t a super-villain. (That I know of…)
My uncle insists that my mom (his sister) calls him Doctor [insert last name here]. Mom finds it offensive, I find it hilarious.
Rereading the comic. Noticing the foreshading.
But if he were a woman, wouldn’t that be Dr. Femalefactor?
Upon re-reading this, I could have sworn Parker originally claimed she looked like Winnona Rider and Malefactor pivoted into a joke about the shoplifting incident.
I think I like the new version better (unless my memory was playing tricks on me and that never happened, in which case I prefer the real version better).
You have a VERY good memory! One critique of The Hero Business cited that Winnona Rider joke as being “out of sync” with the good-natured humor of the comic…. and on reflection, I agreed. It’s the one bit of dialogue that really bugged me, so I changed the joke for the upcoming trade paperback; And yeah, I think this one’s much better, too! ๐
